French and American chamber music



Chamber Socials are an intimate evening out by candlelight with food, drink, and spectacular live music performed by the principal players of the PGSO.  Appetizers are included with table seats, and a cash bar is available to all. Doors open at 6:30pm and patrons are encouraged to arrive early to find a seat.

Tables may be reserved for groups of 4, 6, or 9 by calling the PGSO box office.

  • Claude-Paul Taffanel influenced the style of flute playing from the mid 19th century on with the creation of the French Flute School. Although inspired by Bach, he composed to show the neglected expressive possibilities of the flute. Read more
  • Part of the “Harlem Renaissance” of 1920s-30s in the US, William Grant Still achieved many firsts as an African-American composer and conductor. A chamber piece from his prolific and eclectic career, Miniatures was inspired by folk music from the US, Mexico, and Peru. Read more
  • Born to a well-to-do family, George Onslow stumbled off the path to politics with a scandal. He learned music from a young age, but wasn’t thought especially talented until he fell in love with the cello and started composing chamber music. Read more
  • George Gershwin seemed less than studious as a teenager until he learned to play piano in secret and surprised his family.  He started his career on Tin Pan Alley before finishing high school. His Russian immigrant family was creative and musical, with his brothers Ira and Arthur and sister Frances all working in show business. Read more
