From inspiration rooted in nature, art, and literature blossoms work by Gimon, Respighi, and Tchaikovsky.  The concert grows to a towering finale: Rachmaninoff's masterpiece second piano concerto with the outstanding Carter Johnson, an international competition-winning pianist.

  • Canadian composer Katerina Gimon’s works have been played in Canada and abroad, including in Hong Kong and Germany. Gimon draws influence from a myriad of places — from the Ukrainian folk music of her heritage to indie rock, as well as from her roots as a songwriter. Katerina's website
  • A reluctant but talented student of music, Ottorino Respighi didn’t put piano scales in his compositions because he struggled to play them himself. A polyglot, he read in 11 languages.
  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote his lyric opera Eugene Onegin alongside his fourth symphony and around the events of his tumultuous, failed marriage. Worried about his opera’s unconventional structure, he had it debuted by Moscow Conservatory students. Learn more about the opera
  • Sergei Rachmaninoff suffered from anxiety and depression after critics attacked his work, leaving him unable to compose until helped by hypnotherapy. He recovered to compose his beloved second piano concerto, taking the solo role himself over 140 times.
  • Canadian pianist Carter Johnson was the first ever Canadian finalist in the prestigious 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, held in Fort Worth, Texas every four years. Carter's website
